STYROFOAM IGUANA SOFTWARE PRESENTS:
SIGNFONT and the ASL keymap for the AMIGA!!!!
This file is SFNT.DOC. If you have not read README.FIRST,
please read it first.
To install the font and the keymap, simply execute the script
file sfntinstl. That is, type execute sfntinstl in the CLI.
The keymap follows the same pattern as the MACintosh version,
by Emerson and Stern, but the \ key is nest to the = key (upper right)
on the AMIGA and it is next to the ] key (above the return on the MAC,
or between the ] and HELP keys on the AMIGA....the MAC has another
key there) on the MAC, but I have decided to stay with the assignments
given by Emerson and Stern. If you do not have a copy of the keyboard
layout for SIGNFONT, you can try writing to Emerson & Stern
(see README.FIRST for the address) or to me (again, see README.FIRST)
and ask for one. Emerson & Stern has been VERY UNhelpful to me as I
have been trying to do this, and the man who wrote the Signfont book
has an Amiga! If you are a registered user of the AMIGA version (see
README.FIRST), I will send you one automatically. If not, please
REGISTER. If you truly cannot afford to send me $5, then send a
SASE and 25¢, and i will send you one anyway (the 25¢ is for the photocopy,
you still have to put a stamp on the return envelope). I also accept
stamps and FUNNY stories and jokes in SIGNFONT as payment. (to register,
send the check anyway, if I like your story or joke, i will send the check
back to you, uncashed).
To use the font, you need a program that will allow you to change
fonts (like Excellence!, or the NotePad) and you also need to set your
keymap to the sfnt1 keymap. (see README.FIRST for some VERY important
warnings and information about doing this!) You need to follow the instructions
in README.FIRST in order to use things like keyboard commands for searches,
and to be able to save your files, etc. I am working on a WordProcessor
that will allow you to do EVERYTHING in signfont (all the menus, commands,
etc will be in ASL) but until I or someone else gets it done, you need
to use the other keymap and fonts to see what you are doing with the
AMIGA operating system.
Unfortunately, I cannot explain how to write in SignFont to you
in this format. I need pictures to show the uses of the symbols.
Emerson & Stern has books, etc, but I do not know how much they cost.
I will work on it, but I need to look into the copywrite info first.
SPEAKING OF WHICH: the AMIGA Signfont.font and the sfnt1 keymap are
© 1989 by Glyn Thomas Gowing and Styrofoam Iguana Software. They are
placed into the public domain for in any and all NON COMMERCIAL applications.
Deaf clubs may use it to publish information, but you may not charge for
the actual font file or the keymap file. No charges other than reasonable
disk copying charges may be received for these files by any one other than
the author. It is for the Deaf Community and those of us who are hearing,
but still take part in that unique, splendid culture of the Deaf.
(note--not a sub-culture. The Deaf Community is a rich, full culture in
its own, just as is the French or German, or Chinese cultures.)
